LEH: Ladakh marked the beginning of the New Year for the Buddhist community with the observance of Losar, as devotees across the region offered prayers and participated in traditional rituals in a solemn and reflective atmosphere.

On the occasion, special religious rituals and prayers were jointly organized by the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) and the Ladakh Gonpa Association (LGA) at the Dharma Centre in Choglamsar. Monks from various monasteries performed customary prayers seeking peace, prosperity and well-being for the people, while devotees gathered to mark the auspicious beginning of the New Year in accordance with age-old Buddhist traditions.

The celebrations this year were notably subdued, in line with the earlier appeal made by the LBA to observe Losar as a low-key affair.

The association had urged the people of Ladakh to refrain from elaborate festivities and public celebrations, emphasizing prayer, spiritual reflection and compassion.

Religious leaders highlighted the significance of Losar as a time for renewal, purification and reaffirmation of Buddhist values such as harmony, non-violence and collective well-being. Offerings, lighting of butter lamps and recitation of sacred texts formed the core of the observance at the Dharma Centre.

Across Ladakh, households marked the day by performing customary rituals, cleaning shrines, offering prayers and sharing traditional greetings, while largely avoiding music, dance and large gatherings.

The restrained observance reflected a shared sentiment of respect and solidarity, as well as adherence to the guidance issued by religious bodies.

Losar, one of the most important festivals in the Buddhist calendar, traditionally ushers in a period of festivity spanning several days. However, this year’s observance underscored a collective commitment to simplicity, prayer and spiritual mindfulness, as Ladakh welcomed the New Year with reverence and restraint.

Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta extended warm greetings to the people of Ladakh on the auspicious occasion of Losar, the traditional New Year celebrated with devotion and joy across the region.

The Losar festivities will continue for the next nine days, featuring special prayers to gods and goddesses, along with traditional dances and songs.

Meanwhile, on the joyous occasion of Ladakhi Losar, the District Administration of Kargil extends its heartfelt greetings and warmest wishes to all of you.

As we welcome the new year, let’s hope that it brings with it the promise of peace, prosperity and good health for all. May the traditional spirit of unity, compassion and shared celebrations illuminate every home and heart across the District.

Let us embrace the new beginnings with hope and renew our commitment to the harmony and progress that defines our resilience.

Losar in Ladakh is the vibrant Tibetan New Year and a major Buddhist festival, celebrated with prayers, traditional music, masked dances known as cham, feasting, and rituals that symbolise the welcoming of prosperity and the banishing of evil spirits.
