Kargil, Mar 18: Amid prevailing cloudy conditions across most parts of Ladakh, the Meteorological Centre Leh has issued a detailed weather forecast and travel advisory, cautioning residents and travellers about an approaching spell of unstable weather likely to affect the region over the coming days.
According to the advisory, higher reaches are already witnessing light snowfall, while scattered areas are expected to receive light to moderate snowfall through the day on Wednesday. The weather is projected to deteriorate further between March 19 and 20, with cold, cloudy and windy conditions dominating across Ladakh.
Intermittent spells of light to moderate rain and snowfall are likely at many locations during this period. The advisory notes that the main intensity of the weather system is expected from the afternoon of March 19 through March 20. There is also a possibility of heavier snowfall over high-altitude passes, particularly in the Zojila and Shinkula sectors.
Officials have warned that such conditions may lead to disruptions in surface connectivity. The Zojila axis, a critical link between Kashmir and Ladakh, faces a high risk of closure from Wednesday afternoon until March 21 due to anticipated snowfall and reduced visibility.
The weather is expected to remain generally cloudy and windy on March 21, followed by an improvement, with mainly dry conditions forecast between March 22 and 25.
The advisory has also flagged the risk of landslides and avalanches triggered by rain and snow activity, urging people to exercise caution, especially in vulnerable areas and along mountain routes.
Authorities have advised against undertaking outdoor activities during the affected period and have urged commuters to stay updated with real-time weather and road status reports to ensure safe travel.
The Meteorological Centre has reiterated the need for vigilance, particularly for those planning movement across high mountain passes, as rapidly changing conditions could impact both safety and accessibility.
