NEW DELHI, Aug 8: Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over a US Senate bill that could pave the way for tariffs of up to 100 per cent on India and four other countries over their purchases of Russian oil.
Kejriwal alleged that US President Donald Trump has increasing influence over decisions taken by the Indian government and accused the Modi-led administration of compromising the country’s interests.
His remarks came after the US Senate passed legislation seeking to authorise steep tariffs on countries continuing to purchase Russian oil, arguing that such trade contributes to financing the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Reacting to the development in a post on X, Kejriwal alleged that the Modi government had “submitted to Trump’s slavery” and claimed that India was being humiliated on the international stage.
He further alleged that Trump’s interference could now be seen in “every small and big decision” of the country.
The proposed US legislation has raised concerns over the potential economic impact on countries that maintain significant energy trade with Russia, including India.
