NEW DELHI, JUNE 28 : Justice P. S. Narasimha has become a member of the Supreme Court Collegium following the retirement of Justice J. K. Maheshwari on Sunday.
As the fifth senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Narasimha will remain part of the Collegium until his retirement on May 2, 2028.
With Justice Maheshwari demitting office after nearly five years, the Collegium now comprises Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice B. V. Nagarathna, Justice M. M. Sundresh and Justice P. S. Narasimha.
The Collegium, established through a 1993 Supreme Court judgment, is responsible for recommending the appointment, transfer and elevation of judges to the Supreme Court and the country’s High Courts. While the government may return a recommendation for reconsideration, a reiterated recommendation is generally accepted.
Born on May 3, 1963, in Hyderabad, Justice Narasimha graduated from Nizam College before earning his law degree from the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, in 1988. He practised in the High Court and Supreme Court, was designated a senior advocate in 2008, served as Additional Solicitor General of India from 2014, and was elevated directly from the Bar as a Supreme Court judge on August 31, 2021.
