New Delhi, Jan 6: A group of JNU students raised controversial slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on campus following the Supreme Court’s decision to deny bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case.
A purported video of the protest, held on Monday night, showed students chanting slogans condemning the Prime Minister and Home Minister.
Aditi Mishra, president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union, clarified that the protest was an annual event commemorating the violence that occurred on campus on January 5, 2020.
“All the slogans raised during the protest were ideological in nature and do not constitute personal attacks. They were not directed at anyone specifically,” Mishra told.
A senior police officer confirmed that no complaint has been received regarding the slogans raised during the demonstration.
The protest coincides with the anniversary of the January 5, 2020 violence, when a mob of masked individuals stormed the JNU campus and targeted students across three hostels. The attackers unleashed mayhem with sticks, stones, and iron rods, assaulting residents and destroying windows, furniture, and personal belongings.
At least 28 people were injured in the attack, including then-JNU Students’ Union president Aishe Ghosh. The campus witnessed nearly two hours of chaos and violence.
The Delhi Police faced severe criticism for their alleged inaction during the attack and for subsequently naming student union leaders, including Ghosh, in two FIRs related to vandalism on campus. The police response to the incident had sparked widespread outrage and debate over campus security and law enforcement conduct.
