Jammu Dec 31: Taking serious note of the declining groundwater levels and vanishing traditional water bodies, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has launched a citywide initiative to rejuvenate and restore old ponds as part of its sustainable water management mission.
Under this drive, JMC has completed the “Rejuvenation of Water Body (Pond) near Chenab College, Ward No. 55,” aimed at restoring the pond’s ecological balance and improving water quality. The restoration was carried out using advanced bioremediation techniques, which helped break down organic pollutants and revive the pond’s natural ecosystem.
One of the major outcomes of the project has been the removal of encroachments and prevention of illegal dumping, achieved through proper demarcation and protection of the pond area. This effort has helped safeguard the natural drainage system and ensure the long-term preservation of the water body.
Highlighting the importance of the initiative, JMC Commissioner Dr. Devansh Yadav said that rejuvenating urban water bodies remains a top environmental priority. “Such projects not only recharge groundwater but also restore the ecological and social value of neglected public assets,” he said, adding that JMC will continue expanding these efforts to boost climate resilience and long-term water security across Jammu.
Hydrologically, the rejuvenated pond now aids groundwater recharge by improving rainwater percolation and reducing runoff—key for urban areas struggling with water stress. Beyond that, it also enhances the aesthetic appeal, public health, and biodiversity around Chenab College, creating a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
Reaffirming its commitment, JMC said more pond restoration projects are in the pipeline as part of its sustainable urban development strategy, reflecting its vision to conserve natural resources and elevate the quality of life for Jammu’s residents.
