JAMMU, Dec 2: In a significant move towards reforming school education in the Union Territory, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has officially designated the J&K Board of School Education (JKBOSE) as the State School Standards Authority (SSSA).
This decision aligns with the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which mandates the establishment of SSSAs across all States and Union Territories.
The primary objective of this designation is to ensure a transparent, independent, and effective regulation of school education institutions throughout Jammu and Kashmir. The NEP 2020 emphasizes the crucial separation of regulatory, academic, examination, and administrative functions within the education system.
As the newly designated SSSA, JKBOSE will be entrusted with a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including: Standard setting, monitoring and compliance assurance.
It will establish clear and robust standards for school education, oversee the adherence of schools to these standards and ensure compliance with norms related to safety, infrastructure, teacher qualifications, governance, and financial probity within educational institutions.
The decision is also supported by recommendations from PARAKH, the national assessment centre under NCERT, which has advocated for State Examination Boards to be designated as SSSAs to ensure equivalence of standards across various School Boards.
The Pertinent to mention that several other States and Union Territories, including those governing the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education, and Mizoram Board of School Education, have already appointed their respective SSSAs.
This designation is expected to bring greater accountability, consistency, and quality assurance to the school education landscape in Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring that educational institutions meet high standards for the benefit of students and the community.
