Jammu, Feb 6: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday announced a significant expansion of medical education in Jammu and Kashmir, unveiling plans to add 548 new medical seats across various disciplines in the Union Territory.
While presenting the budget in the Legislative Assembly, Abdullah highlighted the government’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare sector’s foundation through enhanced educational infrastructure.
The new seats include 340 MBBS seats, 128 postgraduate medical seats, 34 postgraduate Ayurveda seats, and 46 Diplomate of National Board (DNB) seats, collectively aimed at increasing the region’s medical education capacity.
“This year, we are adding 548 medical seats to enhance educational capacity and build a robust healthcare system,” the Chief Minister stated during his budget address.
In a major infrastructural development, Abdullah also confirmed that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Kashmir is set to become operational by June 2026, marking a significant milestone in the region’s healthcare landscape.
The announcement reflects the government’s focus on expanding both medical education opportunities and healthcare infrastructure in the Union Territory.
