SRINAGAR, JUNE 20: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has suspended a cardiologist at Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag pending an inquiry into alleged irregularities in cardiac procedures carried out under the PMJAY-SEHAT scheme, Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo said on Saturday.
The suspension of Dr. Syed Maqbool follows a departmental inquiry conducted by a panel from Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), which reportedly pointed to procedural lapses, wrongful claims under the PMJAY-SEHAT scheme and other alleged instances of misconduct, recommending major disciplinary action.
“We had initiated an inquiry after receiving complaints and a suspension order has now been issued,” Itoo told reporters in Kulgam.
The minister, however, emphasised that the doctor must be given an opportunity to present his side before any final decision is taken.
“He should also get a chance to clear his position. Such incidents are unfortunate. The medical profession is a noble one and doctors should never compromise with the lives of patients,” she said.
Dr. Maqbool has denied the allegations and submitted a detailed response to the authorities, terming the charges baseless.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to a fair and transparent process, Itoo said the inquiry would be taken to its logical conclusion and action would be based on its findings.
The case has drawn attention from both the medical fraternity and the public, with several voices calling for an impartial investigation as the inquiry progresses.
