Jammu, June 11: The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has announced the formation of a high-level committee aimed at tackling earthquake risk and enhancing disaster preparedness across the Union Territory. The move, formalized under Government Order No. 685-JK(GAD) of 2025, is part of broader efforts to improve structural safety and protect lives in one of the country’s most earthquake-prone regions.
Chaired by the Administrative Secretary of the Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Department, the committee includes senior officials, scientists, and academic experts from prestigious institutions such as the National Centre for Seismology, University of Kashmir, IIT Jammu, NIT Srinagar, and IUST Awantipora.
The committee has been tasked with crafting a comprehensive roadmap for earthquake risk management in Jammu and Kashmir. Its responsibilities include identifying vulnerabilities, conducting risk assessments, and recommending structural safety measures for public infrastructure and private buildings.
Key areas of focus will include the development of disaster response strategies, public awareness campaigns, safety code enforcement, and training programs for emergency responders. The group is also expected to foster coordination among government departments, local bodies, and research institutions.
As per the order, the committee can co-opt additional members as needed to ensure interdisciplinary inputs. It will receive field support from relevant departments to carry out its assessments and planning initiatives.
This step reflects an urgent need to address growing concerns over seismic threats in the region, with emphasis on preparedness, resilience, and community-level engagement.
