J&K DGP Reviews Security, Pushes Crackdown on Terror, Drugs in Awantipora

Awantipora, Mar 7: In a marathon security powwow at the District Police Office in Awantipora, J&K’s top cop Nalin Prabhat dissected the region’s fragile law-and-order tightrope Saturday—zooming in on counter-terror ops, drug busts, and street crime as threats simmer amid the Valley’s edgy calm.

Flanked by a heavyweight lineup of security heavyweights—including Special DG Coordination PHQ J&K S.J.M. Gillani, IGP Kashmir Zone V.K. Birdi, DIG South Kashmir Javid Iqbal Matoo, SSP Awantipora, Addl. SP, and SOG’s DySPs—Prabhat pulled no punches. He drilled down into the district’s security matrix, scrutinising both “kinetic” (read: guns-blazing raids) and “non-kinetic” (intel-driven, community outreach) strategies to dismantle terror networks still lurking in the shadows.

The DGP didn’t shy from the gritty realities: Awantipora, nestled in south Kashmir’s Pulwama belt—a hotbed for past militancy—demands iron-fisted policing. He grilled officers on real-time intel flows, border vulnerabilities, and the drug scourge that’s hooking youth and funding radicals. “We’ve made gains, but complacency kills,” sources quoted him saying, as he pored over maps, op reports, and crime stats.

“Intensify the assault on anti-nationals, narco-terrorists, and every crook poisoning our streets—strict, swift action, no mercy,” Prabhat thundered, laying out a multi-pronged blueprint. Top priorities: seamless agency sync-ups (Army, CRPF, intel wings), intel-led preemptive strikes, and “proactive policing” to nip unrest in the bud—think foot patrols, village committees, and cyber monitoring.

He spotlighted the drug menace as a “silent killer,” linking it directly to terror financing and youth radicalisation, urging SDPOs to choke supply chains from across the LoC. Criminal syndicates peddling everything from smack to synthetics? “Crush them before they spread,” he directed, calling for tech upgrades like drones and AI analytics in ops.

Praising the “unwavering resolve” of jawans and officers—who’ve notched recent successes in foiling infiltrations and IED blasts—Prabhat struck a motivational note: “Stay vigilant, disciplined, mission-locked. Your grit is Kashmir’s shield—peace isn’t gifted, it’s earned through sweat and steel.”

The meet comes against a tense backdrop: Spring thaws often spark LoC crossings, while hybrid militants exploit social media for recruitment. Prabhat’s roadmap signals no let-up—J&K Police aims to fortify gains post-Article 370, blending hard power with hearts-and-minds wins to keep the Valley on an even keel ahead of tourist season and polls.

Officials hailed the session as a “force-multiplier,” with Prabhat promising more such district-deep dives to sustain momentum. As ranks dispersed with renewed fire, Awantipora’s streets felt that much safer—or at least, the bad guys did.
