Srinagar, Oct 04: The Jammu & Kashmir administration has swung into action, issuing high-alert advisories and mobilizing resources as the region gears up for a severe weather spell. The trigger is an “active Western Disturbance” forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which is set to lash J&K with intense rainfall and significant snowfall from today, with the peak fury expected over the weekend.
According to a press release from the Office of the Chief Executive Officer, Emergency Relief Organization, widespread rain and snowfall are predicted from October 5 to 7. The weather system is expected to be at its most severe from the evening of October 5 until the afternoon of October 7.
The forecast has identified specific Expected Areas of Impact (EAOI): Higher Reaches: Areas including Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg-Zojila, Sinthan Pass, and Pir Ki Gali are likely to experience moderate to heavy snowfall. Middle Reaches: These areas can expect light snowfall. Kashmir Plains: Widespread moderate to heavy rainfall is anticipated. Jammu Division: The region may face isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and strong winds gusting up to 60-70 kmph.
The Disaster Management department has warned of several probable impacts, including: Significant disruption to surface transport, particularly on the strategic Jammu-Srinagar and Srinagar-Leh National Highways.
Possibility of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas, a rise in water levels in rivers, streams, and drainage systems, leading to potential waterlogging in low-lying areas and travel and communication disruptions in high-altitude and snow-affected areas.
In light of these forecasts, farmers have been strongly advised to suspend all agricultural operations from October 5 to 7.
Precautionary Measures for the Public: The authorities have circulated a detailed list of “Do’s and Don’ts” to ensure public safety. Residents are urged to: Stay indoors during heavy rain, snowfall, or thunderstorms. Keep emergency supplies such as water, food, medicines, torches, and batteries ready.
Avoid all unnecessary travel, especially on landslide-prone roads and high-altitude passes. Secure loose objects and rooftops. Evacuate low-lying areas if advised by local authorities. Monitor official updates from the IMD and Disaster Management authorities.
Conversely, the public is warned: Do not venture into flooded rivers or streams. Avoid touching fallen electric wires. Do not ignore official warnings and advisories. Refrain from outdoor activities during high winds, hailstorms, or snowstorms.
