BJP spokesperson and MLA R S Pathania said the party would take legal action against Abdullah if he failed to provide evidence to support his claims.
Abdullah had earlier alleged at a National Conference workers’ convention that attempts were being made to weaken his government, claiming that a BJP-linked Supreme Court lawyer had allegedly offered money, ministerial positions and a promise of statehood to an MLA in exchange for support.
Reacting to the allegations, Pathania asked the chief minister to identify the MLAs who were allegedly approached, name the BJP leaders involved, and provide details of when and where such offers were made.
“If such a serious incident occurred, why was it not reported to investigating agencies? An elected chief minister cannot make allegations without presenting evidence,” Pathania said.
The BJP leader accused Abdullah of making “baseless” allegations to divert attention from what he described as the National Conference government’s failures in governance. He alleged that the government had not fulfilled its promises and claimed that corruption and a transfer culture had increased under its rule.
Pathania demanded that Abdullah withdraw his remarks or apologise publicly, warning that the BJP would file a defamation case if the allegations were not backed by proof.
The BJP also announced plans to launch a statewide campaign highlighting alleged corruption issues under the National Conference government.
On the National Conference’s proposed protest in Delhi seeking restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, Pathania said the Centre’s position was clear, asserting that statehood would be restored at an “appropriate time” and accusing the NC of politicising the issue.
