Leh, Jan 17: Amid growing concern in Ladakh over the unfolding situation in Iran, Member of Parliament Mohmad Haneefa Jan on Saturday said he is in constant coordination with central authorities to ensure the safety of Ladakhi students and residents currently staying in the country.

Responding to anxiety among families across Ladakh, the MP said he has been receiving frequent calls from parents and relatives worried about the well-being of their loved ones in Iran, where civil unrest and protests have been reported from several provinces.

In a statement issued on social media, Haneefa Jan said the matter has been taken up with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Tehran.

“I am in constant touch with the Ministry of External Affairs and have also spoken with officials at the Indian Embassy in Iran two to three times. The situation is being closely watched,” he said.

According to information shared with him by the Ministry, developments in Iran are under regular review and there is no immediate threat to Indian nationals at present. The MP said the Government of India has reiterated its commitment to the safety and welfare of all Indians abroad, including students and residents from Ladakh.

Haneefa Jan urged Ladakhi students, tullab, and other residents currently in Iran to ensure that their contact details are registered with the Indian Embassy and to remain in regular communication with embassy officials. He said this would enable authorities to respond swiftly in case of any emergency.

“I will continue to remain in close coordination with all concerned authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of our people,” the MP said, while appealing to families to remain calm.

The MP, who represents Ladakh’s lone Lok Sabha seat, said he has been inundated with calls from distressed families seeking updates amid reports of protests and security operations in different parts of Iran, including Lorestan and Lahijan. While local sources have spoken of disruptions and casualties, Indian officials have conveyed that there has been no escalation posing a direct risk to Indian nationals so far.

The assurance has brought some relief to families in Kargil, Leh, and other parts of Ladakh, many of whom have been awaiting official clarity as the situation continues to evolve.

Ladakh, which has a sizeable Shia Muslim population, shares long-standing cultural and educational links with Iran. A number of students from the region pursue religious and higher education there, making developments in the country a matter of deep concern for the region. The MP’s outreach reflects the sensitivities involved and the reliance of families on timely diplomatic engagement during periods of international uncertainty.
