TEHRAN, Sep 27: Iran is awaiting an official response from the United States through intermediaries on its proposal concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said.
Araghchi said Tehran had taken note of US President Donald Trump’s public rejection of the proposal but had not yet received a formal response through the intermediaries involved in the discussions.
“We saw the US President’s initial reaction. However, nothing has been conveyed to us through intermediaries,” Araghchi said in comments published by Iranian media on his Telegram channel.
The Iranian foreign minister said Trump had made several statements on the issue that Tehran considered contradictory, adding that Iran would wait for the intermediaries to communicate Washington’s final position before deciding its next steps.
Araghchi also said any progress toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz would depend on the United States meeting Iran’s conditions.
Earlier, Araghchi had said Tehran conveyed a seven-day proposal to Washington through intermediaries for reopening the strategic waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a key international shipping route, particularly for global energy supplies. According to the report, the passage of commercial vessels through the strait is currently restricted amid the latest escalation between Iran and the United States.
The two countries had signed a memorandum in mid-June aimed at beginning the process toward a peace agreement, but tensions escalated again several weeks later, with Washington accusing Tehran of attacks on commercial vessels in the strait.
The latest developments have resulted in renewed exchanges between the two sides and growing uncertainty over the future of shipping through the strategically important waterway.
