Leh, Oct 19: Internet services were restored across Leh and Kargil districts late this evening after a day-long suspension, paving the way for smooth communications ahead of the Ladakh Autonomous Bodies-Kargil Development Authority’s (LAB-KDA) critical meeting with the Union Home Ministry.
The upcoming discussions are set to address Ladakh’s long-standing demands, including statehood, constitutional safeguards, and enhanced representation in key national institutions, forming the core of a four-point agenda.
Authorities had suspended internet connectivity on Friday following restrictions imposed under Article 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita, citing law and order concerns ahead of the LAB-KDA’s planned Silent March and region-wide Blackout call on October 18. The preventive measures, aimed at maintaining public order, drew widespread criticism across the Union Territory, highlighting the political sensitivity surrounding the deliberations.
Officials confirmed that connectivity was fully restored after evening assessments indicated stable conditions in both districts. The decision coincided with renewed calls from local political bodies and social groups urging peaceful expression and constructive engagement over Ladakh’s constitutional and developmental issues.
The resumption of internet services is expected to facilitate unhindered communication as the LAB-KDA prepares to formally present its demands before the Ministry of Home Affairs subcommittee, signaling a tentative easing of regional tensions.
