Srinagar, Mar 17: A Consumer Forum in Jammu and Kashmir has mandated IndiGo airline to compensate two passengers with ₹1.19 lakh after their checked baggage went missing on a return flight from Saudi Arabia. The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Baramulla/Bandipora awarded ₹89,000 for the lost bag’s value, ₹20,000 for mental agony and inconvenience, plus ₹10,000 in litigation costs, payable within 30 days or face 10% annual interest.
Mohammad Maqbool Hakeem and Farhat Ara, traveling from Dammam via Delhi to Srinagar, checked in five bags but received only four. Despite filing a Property Irregularity Report and follow-ups with photos, the bag—containing valuables worth ₹89,000—remained untraced, blamed on IndiGo’s poor baggage handling at Dammam without individual tags.
The Commission, led by President Peerzada Qousar Hussain and Member Nyla Yaseen, held the airline liable for negligence. Represented by Advocate Umar Bashir, the couple succeeded in proving IndiGo’s failure despite the carrier’s denial.
