NEW DELHI, Sept 26: Opposition INDIA bloc parties are likely to hold a meeting in New Delhi on September 30 to discuss concerns related to the Election Commission and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, sources said.
The proposed meeting comes amid increased coordination among opposition parties over the functioning of the Election Commission and the SIR exercise.
According to sources, the parties have been in touch with one another and are discussing a coordinated response to the issues.
The CPI(M), CPI and CPI(ML)-Liberation have sought the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and demanded an immediate halt to the SIR process. The Congress has also intensified its criticism of Kumar.
The Congress Working Committee is scheduled to meet on September 29 to discuss its strategy on the issue.
The Election Commission has maintained that differences of opinion and observations are part of normal institutional deliberations, while asserting that its orders have legal backing and follow the prescribed statutory procedures.
The latest developments have also seen the TMC and CPI(M) in West Bengal coordinate on the Election Commission issue. CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby had approached INDIA bloc and other opposition leaders seeking a meeting on the matter.
Opposition parties are also working on another removal notice against CEC Kumar, which could be submitted in both Houses of Parliament after legal vetting.
Earlier, 23 political parties and an Independent MP approached the Chief Justice of India over the SIR exercise and other election-related concerns, highlighting the broader opposition coordination on the issue.
