Leh, Feb 20: In a determined outreach effort amid harsh winter conditions, the Station Medical Centre (SMC), Air Force Station Leh, conducted a village health camp at Youlchung in Ladakh on Thursday.
Located nearly 199 kilometres from Leh, Youlchung remains cut off from the rest of the region during winter due to heavy snowfall. With a population of just 90 residents, access to medical facilities becomes severely limited during this period, underlining the urgency of such interventions.
The camp was led by Wing Commander Vaibhav Sadiwal, Senior Medical Officer of 21 Wing, accompanied by a medical assistant. The initiative aimed at delivering primary healthcare services and extending essential support to the remote community.
During the camp, 52 villagers presented with various medical concerns and were examined thoroughly by the team. Medical assessments included recording of vital parameters such as blood pressure, pulse rate, body temperature and oxygen saturation levels. Random blood sugar tests, height and weight measurements, and general physical examinations were carried out. Eye and ENT evaluations were also conducted. Necessary medicines were dispensed on the spot, and patients were advised on further care and follow-up measures.
Beyond clinical services, the medical team conducted awareness sessions focusing on personal hygiene, prevention of seasonal ailments, balanced nutrition, safe drinking water practices and effective waste management.
As part of humanitarian outreach, the team distributed 250 kilograms of ration among the villagers. The supplies included chocolates, tinned vegetarian food items, fruit cocktail, flour, sugar and pickle.
The camp concluded with active participation from the residents, reflecting the continued commitment of the Indian Air Force to healthcare outreach in remote areas of Ladakh, particularly during challenging winter months.
