Leh, Dec 01: Nimoo Bazgo Power Station in Leh is set to welcome visitors as a potential tourist attraction, with NHPC officials promoting its climate-appropriate technology and high-altitude engineering as a showcase for clean energy in Ladakh.

Head of the station Sanjai Kumar Rai, while briefing media at the project site on Saturday, said the facility is drawing interest for its innovative approach to hydropower generation and its contribution to environmental protection in the region. He credited the Ladakhi community and the local administration for strong support throughout the development process.

The hydropower station produces 45 megawatts of electricity at full capacity through its three turbines, each rated at 15 megawatts. Planned in 2001, the project received approval in 2005 and entered its construction phase in September 2006. All units were declared operational in August 2014, marking a major shift towards sustainable energy in Ladakh.

Rai underlined that the commissioning of the Nimoo Bazgo facility has replaced diesel-based power supply, curbing pollution and cutting dependence on fuel-driven generators that once burdened the region’s development and environment. The station has also emerged as a source of livelihood, employing 79 local youth and engaging 17 vehicles owned by residents.

He further highlighted the utility’s outreach measures carried out under Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives across Ladakh. These include support for apricot processing units, tuition classes in remote villages, a dedicated ambulance for Mahabodhi Hospital, library infrastructure and other education-focused programs.

The power company recently hosted a Painting Competition on Energy Conservation-2025 to motivate schoolchildren to compete at the national stage next year, aligning community awareness with the broader clean energy transition.

Rai expressed optimism that as operations continue to evolve with environment-friendly innovations, the station will emerge not only as a power generator but also as a showcase of renewable engineering for visitors to the Himalayan region.
