Leh: Thrilling sporting action unfolded on the frozen rink at Durbuk, Ladakh, as the Galwan Open Ice Hockey Championship 2025, organised under the Indian Army’s flagship civic outreach programme Operation Sadbhavana, witnessed intense competition, vibrant community participation, and a celebration of Ladakh’s growing ice hockey culture.
The championship saw nine ice hockey teams from different regions compete fiercely over the course of the tournament, showcasing skill, speed, teamwork, and remarkable resilience in the challenging high-altitude conditions.
The matches kept spectators on the edge of their seats, reflecting the rising standard and popularity of ice hockey in Ladakh.
Adding to the excitement, the event featured a women’s exhibition match, highlighting the increasing participation of women in winter sports and promoting gender inclusivity in the region. Kids’ speed skating events further energised the atmosphere, providing young athletes an opportunity to display their talent and nurturing interest in ice sports among children.
The championship also transformed into a cultural celebration, with vibrant cultural performances showcasing Ladakh’s rich heritage and traditions. More than 400 enthusiastic community members, including youth, elders, and families, gathered at the venue, turning the sporting event into a festive community gathering.
The tournament culminated in an electrifying finale, where Team Chushul A delivered a standout performance to clinch the championship title, earning loud applause and admiration from the crowd for their skill and sportsmanship.
The championship was aimed at honing sporting skills, encouraging youth engagement, and strengthening the bond between the Indian Army and local communities.
Organised under Operation Sadbhavana, the initiative reflects the Army’s commitment to promoting sports, healthy lifestyles, and positive youth development in remote border areas.
The successful conduct of the Galwan Open Ice Hockey Championship 2025 once again underscored the Indian Army’s role as a catalyst for community empowerment in Ladakh, using sports as a powerful medium to inspire youth, foster unity, and nurture talent in the region’s unique winter sports landscape.
