Guwahati, February 1: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday confirmed that 15 Bangladeshi nationals were pushed back across the border after being found inside Assam without valid documents, citing concerns over illegal immigration and security. The decision was taken following routine checks by border security forces along the India-Bangladesh frontier, the CM said, underscoring the state government’s continued emphasis on enforcement of immigration laws.
Sarma stated that the individuals were apprehended during coordinated operations by Assam Police and the Border Security Force (BSF) and were handed over to the appropriate authorities before being repatriated across the International Border. The move has triggered mixed reactions among local political circles and civil society groups, some of whom have called for humane treatment and due process in such cases.
The chief minister reiterated that Assam remains committed to safeguarding its demographic and cultural identity, while also ensuring that security along the border is maintained.
