HH Dalai Lama to visit Ladakh this summer

Leh, Apr 2: The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, Dalai Lama, will visit Ladakh this summer after accepting an invitation from a delegation representing key religious bodies of the Union Territory. The schedule and duration of the visit have not yet been disclosed.

The confirmation follows a recent meeting between the spiritual leader and a Ladakh-based delegation comprising members of the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA), led by its president Chering Dorjay Lakrook, representatives of the Ladakh Gonpa Association (LGA) headed by Gelong Stanzin Dorjay, and members of Matho Monastery.

According to LBA president Chering Dorjay Lakrook, the Dalai Lama “kindly accepted” the invitation and agreed to visit Ladakh to offer blessings to the people, continuing a long-standing tradition of regular visits that was interrupted only during the Covid-19 pandemic period between 2020 and 2022.

The visit is expected to draw considerable public attention across Ladakh, where the Dalai Lama’s presence holds deep spiritual importance. His teachings have long resonated among followers of Tibetan Buddhism in the region, and his visits have historically attracted large gatherings.

Ladakh maintains close historical, cultural, and ethnic links with the Ngari region of Tibet. The Union Territory has also remained sensitive from a strategic standpoint due to past instances of border incursions involving Chinese troops stationed across the frontier. However, no such incidents have been reported in recent years amid efforts to improve trade relations between India and China.

The region’s demographic composition reflects its diversity. Muslims form approximately 46–47 percent of the population, primarily in Kargil district, while Buddhists account for around 39–40 percent, largely concentrated in Leh district. Hindus make up about 12 percent of the population. This demographic pattern aligns with the geographic division between Leh and Kargil.

Administrative restructuring announced by New Delhi in August 2024 led to the creation of five additional districts in Ladakh. Nubra, Changthang, and Sham Valley were formed alongside Leh, while Zanskar and Drass were added alongside Kargil.

Amid these developments, demands for statehood with a legislative assembly continue to be raised in Ladakh, reflecting ongoing political aspirations within the Union Territory.

The Dalai Lama’s forthcoming visit, while primarily spiritual in nature, is likely to draw wider attention in a region shaped by both cultural continuity and evolving administrative and political dynamics.
