Jammu: The Hari Tara Charitable Trust, custodian of Jammu’s iconic Amar Mahal Museum & Library, continues to lead efforts in preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Basohli miniature painting—an ancient art form renowned for its intricate detailing, vibrant colours, and depictions of Hindu mythology.
Launched in March 2021, the Guru–Shishya Parampara Programme at Amar Mahal Museum has now successfully completed five years. Fully financed and supported by the Trust, the initiative is dedicated to nurturing young artists in the traditional Basohli painting style through immersive mentorship. Eminent State and National Award-winning artist Shri Sohan Singh Billawria has been instrumental in guiding students and passing on this invaluable artistic legacy.
Speaking on the occasion, Martand Singh, Trustee of Hari Tara Charitable Trust, highlighted that the programme provides complete financial support to both mentors and students, enabling them to focus entirely on mastering the art form. He noted that Basohli painting requires years of dedication and practice, and such initiatives are crucial for its survival and growth.
Encouraged by the programme’s success and increasing participation, the Trust plans to expand its scope through more frequent workshops, exhibitions, and art camps to engage aspiring artists. Martand Singh also appreciated the enthusiastic response from young participants during a recent Basohli art camp held at Amar Mahal Museum as part of the annual Tawi Festival.
He commended the efforts of Dr. Jyotsna Singh, Director of Amar Mahal Museum and Founder of Tawi Festival, along with Shri Sohan Singh Billawria, for their pivotal role in the programme’s success.
Sohan Singh Billawria said that the initiative has enabled aspiring artists to receive sustained training and financial support, allowing them to dedicate themselves fully to this intricate art form. He added that it was a proud moment for students to have their works exhibited at Jammu Kala Kendra during the recent Tawi Festival.
The Hari Tara Charitable Trust, founded in 1970 by Dr. Karan Singh, remains committed to safeguarding traditional art forms and ensuring that the legacy of Basohli painting continues to thrive for future generations.
