LEH: In an operational review ahead of the harsh winter months, Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command, undertook a visit to the forward posts in the Dras and Kargil sectors, assessing the security scenario and preparedness of troops deployed in some of the world’s toughest high-altitude terrains.
The Army Commander’s visit comes at a crucial time as winter begins to set in across Ladakh’s frontier regions, where extreme weather, heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures often coincide with heightened operational challenges. During the visit, Lt Gen Sharma was comprehensively briefed on the emerging threat scenario, recent developments along the Line of Control, and the measures being implemented to ensure uninterrupted vigilance despite the forthcoming deterioration in weather conditions.
Senior field commanders detailed the enhanced surveillance mechanisms, logistical plans and winter stocking measures already underway to maintain operational efficiency through the long winter deployment. The focus remained on safeguarding strategic positions, improving living conditions for troops at remote posts, and reinforcing communication and mobility across snow-bound areas.
Interacting with soldiers stationed at these forward locations, Lt Gen Sharma praised their professionalism, resilience and unwavering commitment in defending the nation’s borders under some of the most hostile climatic and geographical conditions. He acknowledged the extraordinary fortitude displayed by troops who continue to serve at elevations where oxygen scarcity, isolation and unpredictable weather are part of daily life.
Encouraging the troops, the Army Commander urged them to remain steadfast, innovative and mission-focused, stressing that their dedication forms the backbone of national security in these sensitive sectors. He reiterated the Army’s commitment to providing all necessary support, equipment and infrastructure to ensure that the frontline units remain fully prepared throughout the winter season.
The visit not only boosted morale among the personnel but also reaffirmed the Army’s continuous oversight and preparedness along the northern frontiers, especially in the strategically vital Dras–Kargil axis.
