SRINAGAR, JUNE 20 : Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo on Saturday said the government has already initiated an inquiry into alleged irregularities in the Cardiology Department of Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag and suspended the doctor concerned pending completion of the investigation.
Speaking to reporters, the Minister said the inquiry process had been set in motion earlier and the government was awaiting the final report before taking further action.
“We have already started the inquiry and have suspended the doctor concerned. Let the inquiry be completed. We are waiting for the report, and whoever is found guilty will be punished as per the law,” Itoo said.
Meanwhile, the Health and Medical Education Department issued Government Order No. 504-JK (HME) of 2026, placing Dr. Syed Maqbool Ahmad Shah, Associate Professor of Cardiology currently deputed to GMC Anantnag, under suspension with immediate effect pending an inquiry into his conduct.
The order, issued under Rule 31 of the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1956, states that during the suspension period, the officer will remain attached to Government Medical College, Jammu.
Issued by Commissioner/Secretary, Health and Medical Education Department, M. Raju (IAS), the order has been forwarded to the Chief Minister’s Office, Lieutenant Governor’s Secretariat, General Administration Department, State Health Agency and the Principals of GMC Anantnag and GMC Jammu, among others.
The allegations concerning the functioning of the Cardiology Department have triggered widespread concern, with patients and civil society groups demanding a fair and transparent probe.
The government reiterated its commitment to accountability and assured that strict legal and departmental action would be taken against anyone found responsible after completion of the inquiry.
