Guwahati, Oct 1: Captain Shubman Gill produced a record-breaking double century while Rohit Sharma struck a brilliant hundred as India chased down a mammoth target of 406 runs against the West Indies to win the second ODI by eight wickets and seal the three-match series 2-0 on Wednesday.
Chasing 406, India made light work of the target, reaching 406/2 in 43.3 overs. Gill remained unbeaten on 233, while Rohit Sharma scored 101 as the pair put together a stunning 255-run opening partnership in just 26.2 overs.
Gill’s unbeaten 233 off 133 balls included 26 fours and eight sixes. He also broke the record for the fastest double century in ODI cricket, reaching the landmark in 117 balls, surpassing Ishan Kishan’s previous record of 126 balls.
Gill brought up his 11th ODI century in just 62 deliveries and continued his assault throughout the innings.
Rohit, meanwhile, registered his 35th ODI century and also crossed the landmark of 12,000 ODI runs. He became only the seventh batter overall and the third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to reach the milestone.
Earlier, the West Indies posted a massive 405/7 in 50 overs, with three batters scoring centuries. John Campbell made 108, Shai Hope scored 104, while Amir Jangoo smashed 114.
Despite the imposing total, India produced their highest successful ODI run chase, surpassing their previous best of 362/1 against Australia in Jaipur in 2013.
India raced past 100 inside 12 overs, with both openers attacking the West Indies bowling from the outset. Gill and Rohit combined aggressive strokeplay with precise placement to keep the required run rate comfortably under control.
The victory gives India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
