Jaipur, Oct 8: Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday alleged that cattle were dying due to a shortage of fodder and water in drought-like conditions in western Rajasthan and demanded immediate relief measures from the state government.
In a statement, Gehlot claimed that despite Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma announcing fodder depots in Barmer on September 30, neither the depots nor cattle relief camps had been opened even after eight days.
He said the local administration in Gadra Road had sent proposals for fodder depots in 23 patwar circles, but approvals were still pending.
Questioning the delay, Gehlot asked why the government had not made preparations before the election model code of conduct came into force or sought permission from the Election Commission for relief measures.
Citing locals, the Congress leader claimed that cattle had died in dozens of villages, fodder prices had tripled and animals were being forced to eat plastic and garbage.
He said gaushala operators were spending Rs 100-150 per large animal daily against the government assistance of Rs 50, while grants were also being delayed.
Gehlot claimed that even the BJP MLA from Jaisalmer had demanded an immediate drought declaration.
He urged the chief minister to declare drought in the affected areas, open fodder depots and cattle camps, and arrange drinking water through tankers.
