Leh, Apr 07: A fresh spell of rain and snowfall is expected to sweep across parts of Ladakh over the next two days, with authorities cautioning about possible avalanches and disruptions to both road and air connectivity, according to an official update issued by the Meteorological Centre in Leh on Tuesday.
Weather conditions, which remained cloudy across Kargil district and fair to partly cloudy elsewhere, are likely to deteriorate as precipitation is expected to begin along the Zoji La–Drass axis by Tuesday evening. The system is projected to intensify through April 7 and 8, bringing light to moderate rain and snowfall at scattered locations in Kargil and the Zanskar region, while isolated areas of Leh district may also receive precipitation.
Officials have indicated that rainfall is likely to commence from the Zoji La region by late afternoon, potentially affecting traffic movement along one of the most critical mountain passes linking Ladakh with the Kashmir Valley. A moderate risk of temporary closure of the Zoji La pass has been flagged during this period, raising concerns over supply lines and civilian travel.
The advisory further warned that fresh snowfall and rain could trigger avalanches in vulnerable stretches, particularly around Zoji La and Shinkula, prompting authorities to urge caution among commuters and residents. In addition to road disruptions, there is also a low to moderate likelihood of flight cancellations on April 8 due to adverse weather conditions.
A brief improvement in weather is expected between April 9 and 11 with partly cloudy skies, although cloud cover is likely to increase again from April 12 to 15, indicating continued instability in the region’s weather pattern.
Authorities have urged people to stay updated with real-time weather and road status information, stressing that precautionary measures are essential in Ladakh’s high-altitude terrain where sudden weather changes can significantly impact mobility and safety.
