Kargil, Feb 08: A joint team of the Food Safety Department carried out a surprise inspection in the main market of Drass on Saturday to check compliance with food safety rules.
The inspection was conducted under the supervision of Food Safety Officers Shamsiya Banoo and Gazanfar Ali, in the presence of Mohammad Ibrahim.
Officials covered a wide range of business establishments, including vegetable vendors, retail shops, hotels, tea stalls and pharmacies operating in the market area.
During the drive, samples of frozen meat were collected from different shops and sealed for laboratory testing to verify their quality and safety.
According to officials present at the spot, several shopkeepers were found violating prescribed norms. Fines were imposed on those selling expired food items and other products not fit for sale.
The inspection team said such market checks would continue to ensure that traders strictly follow food safety standards and that consumers are protected from unsafe and sub-standard food.
Drass falls under the jurisdiction of the Kargil district administration.
