New Delhi, March 20: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today joined a nationwide awareness campaign on the newly enacted Income Tax Act 2025, urging tax officers to view taxpayers not as adversaries but as vital partners in India’s growth story. Speaking at the event, she emphasised the transformative spirit of the revamped legislation, now effective from April 1, 2026, designed to simplify compliance, boost transparency, and fuel economic momentum.
“The taxpayer is not your adversary. The taxpayer is your partner in nation-building,” Sitharaman declared, striking a collaborative tone amid the government’s push to demystify the new tax regime for millions of salaried individuals, businesses, and professionals. The campaign, rolled out across major cities via webinars, workshops, and digital platforms, aims to familiarise stakeholders with key changes like simplified return filing, reduced litigation, and technology-driven assessments, addressing long-standing pain points from the legacy Income Tax Act, 1961.
Sitharaman highlighted how the 2025 Act slashes complexities—merging heads of income, introducing faceless appeals, and capping reassessments—while incentivising voluntary disclosures to widen the tax net without coercive measures. Officials noted over 5 lakh participants joined virtual sessions today, with regional drives targeting MSMEs in Tier-2 towns and startups in tech hubs. The minister’s remarks signal a cultural shift in tax administration, aligning with the 2026-27 budget’s vision of a ₹60 lakh crore direct tax collection, underscoring taxpayers’ role in funding infra like highways, railways, and digital public goods.
The initiative gains urgency as FY26 kicks off in weeks, with early filers eyeing presumptive taxation tweaks and TDS credit reforms. Sitharaman also flagged the need for digital literacy, promising CBDC-linked refunds and AI chatbots for queries. As India targets a $5 trillion economy, her taxpayer-first mantra sets the tone for a compliance-driven era, potentially lifting voluntary filings beyond 8 crore mark seen in AY25
