Kargil, Aug 21: The University of Ladakh marked a new chapter in student engagement and discipline with the inauguration of its first National Cadet Corps (NCC) Administrative Office at the Kargil Campus. The facility was formally opened by Dr. Mehboob Ali, Incharge Administration, on Wednesday.
For the first time, the NCC has been introduced at the university level as a value-added course, with the objective of fostering unity, discipline, and leadership qualities among students. The initiative is expected to strengthen the spirit of national service and provide young cadets with structured opportunities for personality development alongside their academic pursuits.
The University of Ladakh has conveyed its intent to affiliate the NCC Certificate Course with the 2nd Ladakh Battalion, Kargil, and will seek the necessary approvals to formalize the arrangement. Officials said the step would ensure proper coordination and recognition of the course while aligning the university’s efforts with the established framework of the battalion.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by Dr. Imtiyaz Ali, Head of the Department of Botany, and Lt. Dr. Murtaza Ali, Associate NCC Officer and Director of Sports. Representing the University of Ladakh, Lt. Dr. Murtaza Ali earlier submitted the memorandum for NCC enrollment to the Additional Director General of NCC during the Director General’s visit to the Drass War Memorial.
University officials expressed optimism that the initiative will not only enhance extracurricular learning but also prepare students to contribute more actively in areas of community service, leadership, and national integration. With the establishment of the administrative office, the university has positioned itself to expand NCC activities in Kargil and encourage greater participation of students in the cadet corps.
The introduction of NCC at the university level is being viewed as an important development in enriching student life in the Union Territory, giving young people in the region access to opportunities that blend education with service and discipline.
