New Delhi, May 26 : Twenty-three people were rescued after a fire broke out in a residential building in Delhi’s Rohini area on Tuesday morning, officials said.
The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) said it received a call about the blaze at 7.06am, following which three fire tenders were rushed to the spot in Vijay Vihar.
According to officials, 22 people were rescued by fire personnel from the multi-storey residential building, while one person was rescued by locals before the arrival of the fire department teams.
The fire broke out on the ground floor in an electricity box, causing panic among residents as smoke spread through parts of the building, a DFS official said.
Six two-wheelers parked on the ground floor were gutted in the blaze, including one bicycle, two motorcycles, and three scooters, he said.
Firefighters carried out evacuation and firefighting operations simultaneously to ensure that residents trapped inside the building were brought out safely.
“No injuries were reported in the incident. All residents were evacuated safely,” the officer said.
The fire was brought under control and completely doused by around 8 am.
While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, preliminary findings suggest that it started from the electricity box installed on the ground floor. Police and fire officials are further examining the circumstances that led to the incident.
