NYOMA: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Nyoma, in collaboration with the Agriculture Department Nyoma, on Monday organised awareness and demonstration programmes in the remote villages of Teri and Kurdok under the ongoing Khet Bacho Abhiyan, focusing on natural farming, soil health management, government schemes and improved vegetable cultivation practices.
The day-long programme witnessed the participation of 47 farmers, including 30 from Teri village and 17 from Kurdok, where experts highlighted sustainable agricultural practices aimed at improving productivity and farm incomes in the high-altitude region.
Addressing the farmers, Dr. Phuntsog Tundup, Head of KVK Nyoma, stressed the importance of soil health management through natural farming techniques. He urged cultivators to adopt eco-friendly and sustainable practices to preserve soil fertility while enhancing long-term agricultural productivity.
Dr. Tashi Dolkar, Scientist at KVK Nyoma, sensitised farmers about the objectives of the Khet Bacho Abhiyan and highlighted the potential of vegetable value addition as a means of increasing farm income. She explained how improved post-harvest management and small-scale processing can help farmers secure better returns from their produce.
Nawang Palkit, In-charge Agriculture Extension Officer, Nyoma, briefed participants on various government-sponsored agricultural schemes and provided guidance on accessing benefits available under different programmes.
A key feature of the programme was a live demonstration of low tunnel technology at Kurdok village. Farmers were trained in the use of the technique and provided with UV films and fibre sticks to support off-season vegetable cultivation and protect crops from adverse weather conditions.
In another initiative aimed at improving crop productivity, KVK Nyoma announced that black polythene mulching sheets would be provided to participating farmers in both villages. The intervention is expected to aid weed control, conserve soil moisture and enhance vegetable yields.
Officials said the programme forms part of KVK’s ongoing efforts to strengthen farmers’ capacities and promote climate-resilient agriculture in Ladakh’s remote areas.
