Jammu, Sept 07: Skywatchers are in for a treat as the last total lunar eclipse of 2025 is set to light up the night sky on September 7–8. During the event, the full Moon will gradually take on a glowing crimson-red hue, creating what is popularly known as a Blood Moon. The celestial spectacle will last for about 82 minutes, making it one of the year’s most awaited astronomical events.
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth comes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow on the lunar surface. Instead of vanishing, the Moon reflects sunlight filtered through Earth’s atmosphere, giving it the famous red tint.

Spiritual Significance in India
In India, a lunar eclipse is not only an astronomical event but also a spiritually significant moment, referred to as Chandra Grahan. This year’s eclipse holds added importance as it coincides with Pitru Paksha Purnima, a sacred day dedicated to paying homage to ancestors.
Traditionally, devotees observe specific rituals and precautions during this period to maintain spiritual purity and protect themselves from negative energies.
Do’s During Chandra Grahan
- Meditate, chant mantras, and recite scriptures.
- Take a ritual bath before and after the eclipse.
- Sprinkle holy water (Gangajal) around the home and on idols for purification.
- Recite the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra and devotional hymns for protection.
- Pregnant women often keep a water-filled coconut in their lap until the eclipse ends.
