Kargil, Feb 24: The Executive Councillor for Revenue, PHE, I&FC and Tourism, LAHDC Kargil, Kacho Mohd Feroz, on Monday directed the Border Roads Organisation to ensure that property loss is kept to the minimum during the ongoing widening of the Shargole–Kanoor road stretch.
Chairing a meeting convened to address mounting public concerns over the project, the Executive Councillor emphasised that while road development is necessary to strengthen connectivity, it must not come at the cost of undue damage to agricultural land and residential houses.
The meeting was attended by officers of Project Vijayak under BRO, the Councillor of Shargole Constituency, and representatives of Khachay, Karamba, Foo and Sirjing villages. Participants informed the chair that several habitations between Shargole and Sapila have been affected during the execution of the widening work.
The Councillor of Shargole Constituency presented a detailed account of the grievances raised by residents, particularly regarding the road alignment and its impact on immovable property. Locals voiced concern over potential loss of farmland and structural damage to homes.
After extensive deliberations, the Executive Councillor instructed the executing agency to adopt a cautious and consultative approach while finalising alignment and undertaking further work. He called upon the BRO authorities to address public grievances promptly and ensure that the expansion process results in minimal disruption to livelihoods and property.
Officials of Project Vijayak assured the meeting that the issues flagged by the public would be examined in accordance with established procedures.
The intervention by LAHDC Kargil comes amid growing concern among villagers over the implications of the road widening, with authorities now expected to strike a balance between infrastructure improvement and protection of local assets.
