Waddinxveen (Netherlands), Aug 2: Prolonged dry and unusually hot summers are putting increasing pressure on the Netherlands’ iconic dike system, raising concerns over flood protection while record-low water levels in major European rivers are disrupting cargo transport and affecting agriculture.
In the Netherlands, officials and volunteers have stepped up inspections of dikes as drought weakens the peat-based structures that protect large parts of the country from flooding. Teams are using modern monitoring tools to identify cracks and potential leaks before they become major hazards.
Peter van Duijvendijk, a flood defence manager with the Schieland en de Krimpenerwaard water authority, said around 140 volunteers are regularly inspecting nearly 100 kilometres of dikes.
“As peat loses moisture during prolonged dry periods, it becomes weaker, increasing the risk of water seeping through the dikes,” he said.
The drought has also severely affected navigation on the Rhine River, one of Europe’s busiest freight corridors. In Germany, water levels at Cologne have fallen below the previous record low set in 2018, forcing cargo vessels to reduce their loads drastically.
According to RheinCargo, ships that typically transport 2,000 to 2,500 metric tonnes of cargo are now able to carry only 400 to 600 metric tonnes, creating significant logistical challenges and increasing transportation costs.
In the Dutch city of Nijmegen, falling water levels have exposed parts of the riverbed, leaving some houseboats grounded and revealing objects normally submerged beneath the water.
Experts say the situation reflects the growing impact of climate change, with droughts becoming longer and more frequent across Europe.
Researchers at Dutch water institute Deltares have urged authorities to improve water management by retaining more water during the winter months and adopting nature-based solutions such as restoring wetlands and planting hedgerows to increase groundwater recharge.
The drought has also affected farmers, with water restrictions imposed in several regions to conserve freshwater supplies. Growers have warned that reduced irrigation could lead to lower fruit and vegetable yields and higher food prices.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as Europe faces one of its most severe summer droughts in recent years.
