Drass, Jan 4: The much-awaited Drass Winter Carnival 2026, themed “Jashn-e-Fateh”, commenced on Sunday amid biting cold, bringing together sports, culture and community life in one of the world’s coldest inhabited regions. The winter festival has been organised under Operation Sadbhavana by the Indian Army, with the initiative led by the Fire and Fury Corps.
The opening ceremony in Drass marked the start of a series of events designed to keep the region active and connected during the long winter season. Despite sub-zero temperatures, residents, youth and visitors gathered to witness the launch of the carnival, reflecting the strong community spirit of the area.
The festival focuses on celebrating everyday life in the high-altitude region, while offering young people opportunities to engage in organised sports. Competitions include men’s and women’s ice hockey, archery and tent pegging, allowing local athletes to display their talent on a public platform.
Cultural programmers formed a central part of the inaugural day, with traditional performances by Shina, Balti and Purgi groups showcasing Ladakh’s diverse heritage. A martial arts display by the Karate Club Drass also drew keen interest from the audience.
Officials said the winter carnival is aimed at encouraging youth participation, promoting sports culture and strengthening social ties during the harsh winter months. The event also continues to foster close interaction between civilians and the armed forces, reinforcing cooperation and mutual trust in the region.
The Drass Winter Carnival will continue over the coming days with sports fixtures and cultural activities, underlining ongoing efforts to support community welfare and preserve local traditions in Ladakh.
