New Delhi, Apr 14: Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Tuesday stressed the importance of strong clinical fundamentals in medical education, even as Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to transform healthcare practices.
Speaking at the release of the second edition of the postgraduate textbook Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, the minister said AI should serve as a support system rather than a substitute for core medical knowledge. He cautioned that relying on AI without a solid grasp of clinical concepts could hinder the development of competent doctors.
The book has been edited by Anupam Sibal and Sarath Gopalan, with a foreword by Kathleen B Schwartz.
Highlighting the rapid expansion of medical knowledge, Singh noted that while technology has made information more accessible, medical training must remain rooted in conceptual clarity and hands-on clinical exposure. He also called for continuous upgradation of medical education systems to address emerging challenges and evolving disease patterns.
The updated edition includes 45 chapters covering key areas such as inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, neuro-gastroenterology, and liver disorders, along with newer topics like genetics, endoscopy, and liver transplantation.
Experts pointed out that nearly 30 percent of pediatric patients suffer from gastrointestinal or liver-related issues, underlining the need for specialized training in this field.
The textbook is designed as a comprehensive resource for postgraduate students, trainees, and practicing pediatricians, reflecting the latest advancements in pediatric gastroenterology and hepatology.
