Chennai, Mar 20: Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh was conferred the prestigious ‘Lifetime Achievement Award in Medicine & Diabetes’ at the National Meet ‘MVCON 2026’, organised by M.V. Diabetes Chennai—founded in 1954 by Late Prof M. Viswanathan, a founding father of Diabetology in India.
Expressing deep humility, Singh noted this as his second such honour in under two years—the previous at an international Chennai meet in July 2024—while modestly downplaying the citation praising his “outstanding contribution as a distinguished medical professional, teacher, author, researcher” known for pioneering work on ‘Stress Diabetes in displaced Kashmiri Pandit community’ and ‘Diabetes in Pregnancy’, plus advocacy for advancing diabetes care and public health.
He credited mentorship from stalwarts like Prof V. Seshiah, Prof Sam GP Moses, Prof MMS Ahuja, Prof N.S. Pathania, and his Stanley Medical College teachers, who “hand-held this unknown boy from a peripheral region” to national prominence. Singh reflected on repaying their kindness by guiding his own students—many now heading top departments in Delhi, Chennai, and beyond—evoking “strange satisfaction” as partial thanksgiving.
Expressing ultimate gratitude to patients whose trust sustained him, he shared a touching anecdote of some preserving his old prescriptions in laminates, underscoring enduring bonds in his decades-long career.
