Leh, Jun 20: A five-day training program on mushroom cultivation concluded today in Nubra Valley, marking a forward step in efforts to strengthen women’s economic resilience in remote areas of Ladakh. Conducted by the District Hub for Empowerment of Women, Leh, under Mission Shakti, the initiative ran from June 16 to June 20, reaching villages across the valley with the goal of equipping women with practical, income-generating agricultural skills.
The training was spearheaded by agri-biotechnologist Ms. Sonam Angmo, who offered hands-on instruction and shared cultivation techniques suitable for the region’s unique environment. Emphasizing mushroom farming as a viable and sustainable livelihood option, she guided participants through each stage of the cultivation process, from substrate preparation to harvesting methods.
Women from Turtuk, Tyakshi, Chulunka, Tongsted, Henachey, Charasa, Sumoor, Tsati, Khaltasar, Diskit, Hunder, and Partapur took part in the program, which also included the distribution of mushroom spawn for trial cultivation at home.
With the completion of the training, participants returned to their communities with the tools and knowledge to initiate small-scale cultivation ventures. The program reflects Mission Shakti’s broader vision of women-led development, focusing on self-reliance through skill-based opportunities tailored to local needs.
