New Delhi, Oct 3: Delhi Police has registered three FIRs in connection with Friday’s protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with no individual or organisation named as an accused in the cases.
Two FIRs were registered at Parliament Street Police Station and one at Connaught Place Police Station. According to police, the cases were filed under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for alleged violation of an order issued by a public servant.
The protests involved student groups, political leaders and civil society activists who attempted to gather at Jantar Mantar and sought the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner over allegations related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Police said the protesters allegedly violated prohibitory orders imposed across New Delhi district under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The restrictions prohibited gatherings, processions and demonstrations without prior permission.
Although no person or organisation has been named in the FIRs, police said details of organisers and groups involved in the proposed demonstrations have been mentioned in the complaints.
Police had denied permission for the proposed protest and deployed additional security personnel in and around Jantar Mantar. Hundreds of protesters were detained during the police action, with different reports putting the number at more than 500 and around 1,000 across Delhi.
Those detained included several political leaders, student activists and civil society members. Police said the detainees were subsequently released.
Further investigation into the FIRs is underway.
