DISKIT: Deputy Commissioner Nubra, Mukul Beniwal, on Friday called for a collective societal response to combat drug abuse among youth while flagging off a 3.5-km Anti-Drug Awareness Marathon in Diskit as part of the Lamdon Inter-School Sports Meet.
Held under the theme “Run Against Drugs, Race for Success,” the marathon commenced from the Taxi Stand in Diskit and concluded at Lamdon Model School, drawing participation from students, teachers and residents in a show of support for a drug-free society. The event was jointly flagged off by the Deputy Commissioner and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Nubra.
Addressing participants, Beniwal expressed concern over the increasing vulnerability of young people to substance abuse and underscored the need for sustained awareness campaigns to counter the threat. He said initiatives that combine community participation with public outreach play an important role in sensitising society to the consequences of drug addiction and encouraging preventive action.
Emphasising that the challenge of drug abuse cannot be addressed by government agencies alone, the Deputy Commissioner urged educational institutions, parents, community leaders and civil society organisations to work in tandem to protect the younger generation. He reiterated the administration’s commitment to fostering a healthy social environment and called upon all stakeholders to contribute towards the goal of making Nubra a drug-free district.
The marathon formed one of the major awareness components of the ongoing Lamdon Inter-School Sports Meet and witnessed enthusiastic participation from students representing different branches of Lamdon School. Participants completed the course with notable energy and competitive spirit, turning the event into both a sporting contest and a public awareness exercise.
The presence of teachers, members of the public and local officials added to the outreach effort, reflecting growing community engagement in campaigns aimed at discouraging substance abuse among youth. SHO Nubra, Iftikhar Hussain, was among those present on the occasion.
At the conclusion of the marathon, organisers announced the winners in the boys’ and girls’ categories.
In the boys’ category, Tsering Chosphel of Lamdon School, Leh, secured the first position, followed by Jigmat Thubchan of Lamdon School, Serthi, in second place and Stanzin Dorjey of Lamdon School, Temisgam, in third.
