Romil Singh concludes extensive tour of Nubra Sub-Division

Nubra, Aug 03: In a comprehensive outreach initiative, Deputy Commissioner Leh, Romil Singh Donk, IAS, conducted a multi-day tour of remote border villages including Bogdang, Turtuk, Tyakshi, and Thang in the Nubra Sub-Division. The visit was aimed at reviewing infrastructure projects, gauging administrative gaps, and directly addressing long-standing public grievances in settlements close to the Line of Control.
During his stop at Bogdang, DC Donk was welcomed by Numberdar Mohd Mussa and local residents who voiced multiple concerns, most notably the urgent requirement for a gynecologist at the Primary Health Centre. The community also flagged issues such as damage to irrigation canals, crumbling bridges, and inadequate educational facilities. Following a physical inspection of the health centre, the DC assured prompt action to strengthen medical staffing and improve service delivery.
In Turtuk, villagers led by Numberdar Youl Anayatullah and Farool Abdul Karam drew attention to persistent delays in the issuance of Resident Certificates and called for targeted initiatives to enhance tourism, seen as a potential economic lifeline for the region. DC Donk assessed the condition of the historic Turtuk Wooden Bridge, a critical link for the area, and emphasized its importance for mobility and trade.
Educational shortfalls and environmental concerns dominated the discussion at Tyakshi. Locals highlighted the poor condition of the Government Higher Secondary School and warned of increasing land erosion triggered by rising river levels. The DC inspected the under-construction Tyakshi Bridge and reiterated the necessity of its timely completion to bolster regional connectivity.

The final leg of the tour took place in Thang, the northernmost inhabited village of the Nubra Sub-Division. Here, villagers raised alarm over the breakdown of the Jal Jeevan Mission, frequent stonefalls threatening safety, and the negligible footprint of tourism. The DC reassured residents that critical issues would be addressed through a phased strategy prioritizing urgent interventions. He also visited the Zero RD Point, a strategic location in Thang.
Throughout the tour, the Deputy Commissioner underscored the administration’s commitment to amplifying its presence in border regions and fostering grassroots engagement. Residents were also briefed on the Mission Indus Cleanup initiative, focused on environmental preservation of the Indus River and its tributaries.
Accompanying the DC were SDM Nubra, Mukul Beniwal (IAS); Tehsildar Diskit, Tufail Iqbal (KAS); Executive Engineer R&B Nubra, Er. Shamim Ahmad; CDPO Nubra; Naib Tehsildar Turtuk; and other officials from allied departments, all of whom participated in field inspections and dialogue sessions with the public.
