Khaltse, May 9 : Deputy Commissioner Sham, Kunzes Angmo, JKAS, today chaired a review meeting at the DC Conference Hall in Khaltse to discuss the implementation of the recently notified Solid Waste Management Rules under SO 388E and assess the existing waste disposal mechanisms across the sub-division.
The meeting focused on the implementation of the new regulatory framework related to solid waste management and examined current waste disposal practices being followed in different blocks of Khaltse and Liker.
At the outset, officials read out the major provisions of the notification and held detailed discussions on the challenges associated with garbage collection, segregation and disposal in the region.
Project Director Rural Development Department and officials from the department briefed the chair on the solid waste management systems presently operational in their respective blocks. During the meeting, executive agencies highlighted difficulties being faced in garbage disposal and other logistical and infrastructural constraints affecting implementation of waste management measures.
After reviewing the issues, the Deputy Commissioner directed that another meeting be convened shortly with wider stakeholder participation, including representatives from the Army, GREF, merchants and village lambardars, to evolve a coordinated and systematic approach towards waste management.
She also stressed the need for intensified awareness programmes and cleanliness drives across blocks of District Sham to encourage public participation in sanitation and environmental protection efforts.
Later in the day, the Deputy Commissioner inspected Government Higher Secondary School Khaltse along with SDM Khaltse Mohd Sharif and officials from the Roads and Buildings Department, including the Assistant Executive Engineer and Junior Engineer.
During the inspection, she reviewed issues concerning school infrastructure and interacted with Principal Tsewang Paljor regarding the institution’s requirements. The Deputy Commissioner assured that the concerns raised by the school authorities would be taken up with the concerned departments for resolution.
She also inspected the under-construction school building and directed the concerned engineers to expedite the work while ensuring adherence to quality standards.
The Deputy Commissioner later interacted with students and visited the school library, where she enquired about the availability of books and the reading preferences of students. She advised the school administration to place requisitions for books based on the interests and academic needs of students and teaching staff.
