Pre-KVD event celebrates legacy of Kargil War Heroes
Leh, Jun 22: In a powerful tribute to the gallant soldiers of the Kargil War, an expedition to Sonam Post and a Veer Gatha event in Hanu Valley were held today as part of the prelude to Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorations. The day-long events brought together veterans, serving soldiers, and the local community in honour of the bravery displayed during one of the most intense military operations in modern Indian history.
Leading the expedition was Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, MVC (Retd), whose valour during Operation Vijay in 1999 became a symbol of resilience in the glaciated terrain of the Ladakh Range. Then a Major in the Indus Wing of Ladakh Scouts, he led 30 soldiers in a daring assault to clear intruders from the high-altitude Sonam heights in the Chorbatla sector. In a terrain where survival itself is a test, the operation added a storied chapter to India’s military annals.
The journey to the post named in his honour saw participation from four Junior Commissioned Officers of Ladakh Scouts, culminating in a solemn flag hoisting and wreath-laying ceremony. It was a moment of remembrance and reverence, as attendees paid homage to those who laid down their lives in defence of the nation.
Following the expedition, the spotlight shifted to Hanu Valley where the Veer Gatha event unfolded with vibrant community engagement. Designed to connect the legacy of sacrifice with the aspirations of the youth, the event honoured veterans of the Ladakh Scouts who played a critical role in the battle for Sonam Valley. School children, local youth, and current personnel gathered to listen as these veterans recounted their wartime experiences—stories of grit, brotherhood, and unwavering duty.
Their narratives, shared not as distant memories but as vivid, lived moments, struck a deep chord with the audience. The interactive session transcended generations, forging a bond rooted in service, courage, and love for the motherland.
As the sun dipped behind the rugged Ladakhi peaks, the event concluded with hearts swelling with pride and eyes reflecting purpose. The message was clear: the legacy of the brave will endure—not only in stone memorials and honoured names, but in the spirit of every young Indian inspired to serve.
