30 Teams from across India participate in Multi-Discipline National event
Srinagar, Oct 06: Emphasising the unifying power of sports, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said that athletic events foster friendship and understanding among the youth, serving as bridges of unity across regions. “Sports build bridges of unity and friendship. I am delighted to be here with you at the inauguration of the 69th National School Games,” he said while declaring the event open at the TRC Football Ground, Srinagar.
The Chief Minister formally kicked off the tournament by ceremonially striking the inaugural football, marking the commencement of the national-level games. Despite overcast skies and light rain, the event drew enthusiastic participation from 30 teams representing various States and Union Territories.
The opening ceremony was attended by Minister for Youth Services and Sports Satish Sharma, Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA Lal Chowk Sheikh Ahsan Ahmed (Pardesi), Director General Youth Services and Sports Anuradha Gupta, Secretary J&K Sports Council Nuzhat Gul, and several other dignitaries and officials.
The 69th National School Games will feature competitions in Football, Wushu, Taekwondo, and Table Tennis across six venues in Srinagar. The week-long sporting event aims to promote national integration, discipline, and the spirit of healthy competition among school athletes.
Welcoming the young participants to Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah assured them of the government’s full support. “If any of you face any inconvenience—whether a shortage of warm clothing or any other requirement—please do not hesitate to approach us. We will do everything possible to make your stay and participation comfortable,” he said.
The Chief Minister also encouraged athletes to cherish the experience of participation over competition. “Winning is not as important as taking part. I sincerely appreciate your spirit and enthusiasm in coming here to participate,” he remarked, expressing hope for improved weather during the course of the games.
The ceremony concluded with an impressive march past by all 30 contingents, followed by the players’ oath of sportsmanship. The event was cheered by a large gathering of students, teachers, and sports enthusiasts, setting an energetic tone for the tournament that will showcase the nation’s budding sporting talent.
