Don’t just protect the land, empower those who inhabit it: Stanzin

Leh, Jun 25: A renewed vision for the Changthang region was set in motion as Hon’ble Chairman/Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of LAHDC Leh, Adv. Tashi Gyalson, addressed a multi-stakeholder event organised by WWF-India. The gathering brought together council members, departmental officials, researchers, and community leaders, all united by the shared goal of ensuring a resilient and inclusive future for one of Ladakh’s most remote frontiers.
Held with a strong focus on local voices and ecological balance, the event underscored the urgency of aligning development with the lived realities of Changthang’s people.

Opening speakers Dr. Rishi Kumar Sharma from WWF-India and Councillor Konchok Stanzin of Chushul Constituency called for a model that fuses traditional wisdom with modern practices. They emphasised that preserving Changthang is not just about landscapes—it’s about the communities that define them.
Executive Councillor Tashi Namgyal Yakzee spoke about ongoing efforts by the Council, such as setting up Pashmina de-hairing units, securing GI status for Ladakhi Pashmina, and promoting infrastructure growth and value addition to improve local livelihoods.
In his address, Adv. Tashi Gyalson called Changthang the pride of Ladakh and declared that its development must begin with its people. He urged for a model of growth that respects the region’s culture, ecology, and strategic importance, pointing out that a thriving Changthang strengthens India both socially and at its borders.
He also laid out specific development goals—enhanced skill training, better market access for indigenous products, refined social security systems, and community-aligned zoning of wildlife areas. Initiatives like the Nomadic Festival and platforms such as Delhi Haat were mentioned as examples of showcasing local talent and traditions.
Demchok, a village in the region, was highlighted as a powerful example of reverse migration. CEC Gyalson credited improved facilities, sustainable tourism, and local schemes for drawing people back and reinforcing their ties to the land. Despite tensions across the border, he said, the people of Demchok remain resolute in their national loyalty.
The CEC closed his remarks with a call to shift perception—urging that Changthang be seen not just through the lens of conservation, but as a vital region deserving of growth, attention, and protection. He extended gratitude to WWF-India for their consistent support in the region’s journey.
