Leh, July 8: The Central Government has approved the construction of the Leh Bypass (Southern Alignment) in the Union Territory of Ladakh at an estimated cost of ₹990.51 crore, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced on Wednesday.
The project involves the construction of a two-lane highway with paved shoulders, connecting NH-01 near Phyang village (HPCL Plant) to Upshi on the Leh-Manali Highway (NH-03).
The proposed bypass aims to reduce traffic congestion in Leh town by diverting through traffic and providing an alternative high-quality corridor between NH-01 and NH-03.
Officials said the project will improve travel efficiency, enhance road safety, strengthen regional connectivity and support the long-term economic and tourism growth of Ladakh.
The Leh Bypass is part of the Centre’s broader initiative to upgrade road infrastructure and improve connectivity in strategically important border regions.
