Canada Moves to Strip Citizenship from Mumbai 26/11 Plotter Tahawwur Rana Ahead of PM Carney’s India Trip

TORONTO, FEB 24 : In a bold preemptive strike on terror ties, Canada is racing to revoke the citizenship of Pakistan-born businessman Tahawwur Rana Hussain, the shadowy sidekick to 2008 Mumbai attack mastermind David Headley, just as Prime Minister Mark Carney gears up for a high-stakes visit to India. The 64-year-old, who slipped into Canadian citizenship in 2001 under false pretenses, now faces the axe for lying about his residency— a move that could pave the way for his extradition amid lingering 26/11 justice demands.

Rana, who immigrated in 1997, was nabbed by India’s NIA right after his April 2025 extradition from the US, where he’d already been convicted for plotting a Danish newspaper attack. Global News uncovered IRCC documents revealing the citizenship bombshell: Rana faked his Ottawa-Toronto residency on his 2000 application, claiming just a six-day absence when RCMP digs showed he was parked in Chicago running immigration scams and grocery outfits nearly full-time.

IRCC’s May 31, 2024, notice didn’t mince words on the 26/11 link—it hammered the “serious and deliberate deception” that duped officials into greenlighting his citizenship. “Your misrepresentation led decision makers to believe you met residence requirements when you had not,” they wrote, bundling the case to Federal Court for a final fraud ruling. Lawyers for Rana cried foul, appealing it as a rights violation, with a hearing wrapping last week where feds sought to shield national security intel.

Canada’s immigration honcho Mary Rose Sabater stressed revocation is rare—Global tallied just three in a decade—and always court-vetted for fairness, underscoring citizenship’s sanctity. Rana’s Toronto lawyer battles on, but the timing screams geopolitics: Carney’s India trip spotlights mending post-Khalistan strains, and stripping a 26/11 convict signals zero tolerance for terror enablers hiding in plain sight.

As New Delhi presses for closure on the massacre that claimed 166 lives, this revocation could be Ottawa’s olive branch—proving allegiance to shared anti-terror goals over outdated loyalties. Federal Court holds the gavel; a green light might fast-track Rana back to Indian courts, closing a painful chapter. Families of victims watch closely—justice, nearly two decades on, feels tantalizingly close.
